Jamie Madrox was born to a family living near the Los Alamos research facility in New Mexico; background radiation may have triggered his mutation. When Jamie was born, a doctor’s slap caused him to double into two identical babies, shocking his parents and the doctor. Professor Charles Xavier, a friend of the Madrox family, suggested they move to Kansas to raise the boy in privacy. Dr. Daniel Madrox, Jamie’s father, created a suit for him to wear designed to absorb kinetic energy, the source of the doubles. Later, Damian Tryp, of Singularity Investigations, offered himself to care for Jamie, claiming that Jamie was not a mutant, but a “replacement”, a precursor to mutants who developed their powers from birth. Jamie’s parents refused to hand Jamie over to Tryp. When he was fifteen, Madrox’s parents were killed by a tornado believed to have been caused by Tryp and he began running the farm on his own with clones of himself, or “clones”, until his suit was damaged.
